to beat president obama. a look at the war in afghanistan. now the longest war. how do we get out? does obama's policy differ from president bush's and what is the effect for generations to come? joe and mika and willie join in the conversation later this hour. we begin with the debt crisis. they are trying to make a deal on the deficit. houses of congress are rolling out separate compromises to safe off a default. harry reid is meeting with mitch mcconnell to craft a solution to appeal to both parties. according to reports, this would do the following. it would allow the debt ceiling to be raised three times for a total of $2.5 trillion. in exchange, some $1.5 trillion in spending cuts would be enacted. the plan would be established to identify new deficit cuts. proposal, already, getting a lukewarm response from the fellow republicans. among them, the freshman snar mark arubio and tom coburn. take a listen. >> it gives the president the ability to raise the debt limit. the debt limit isn't the problem. the problem is the debt. the plan, as outlined to me isn't a credible solution. >>

notes to families who succumb to suicide in iraq and afghanistan. the official note from the president reads this decision was made after a difficult and exhaustive review of the former policy, and i did not make it lightly. this issue is emotional, painful, and complicated, but these americans served bravely. they didn't die because they were weak, and the fact they didn't get the help they needed must change. since the beginning of the wars in iraq and afghanistan, more than 1800 members of the military have committed suicide during active duty. even more staggering, more active duty troops have died in the last two years from suicide than in combat. now the president will be writing letters to the families of the service members. here's hoping he has to write very, very few. greg keesling tol us his wife cried for the first time in two years. we're going to heal, he said. we're going to heal. that's

violence in afghanistan. this is a struggle for the rule of law. >> telemundo is live in mexico city. this is still a violence that is shocking by recent standards. what is the reaction in mexico? >> richard, people in mexico is worried by this violence. in monterrey, a group of gunmen entered the bar on friday and killed 20 people. everybody could have been inside the bar and imagine having a good time and suddenly a group of men entered and kill 20 people in the place. people are worried and -- because they've been listening to it for more than five years now. in mexico city on friday, 11 bodies were found piled in the outside of the city and ten more pooem found and others close to the border found on the streets. yeah, this is shocking news. and in one of the statistics that we often forget, 40,000 dead in those five years related to drug violence. how are mexicans reacting to what the government is doing and its efforts? >> well, the last survey said that 60% of new mexicans said that the president is losing this war on drugs. they believe this war should stop. they want to get

in afghanistan, that's not going to coerce me into voting for it. on the other hand, i do think that some of the few remaining serious republicans understand that they will get blamed for this. so i think there is some pressure to do that. one other point i want to mention, rachel, which deeply angers me, these are people, the tea party people, who came to be the constitutionalists, they are in the process of launching the most fundamental assault on the american constitution, fundamental principle we have ever seen, and that was majority rule. the great breakthrough in the 18th century was self governance. and if you read the constitution, the assumption is majority rule in congress. it's majority rule in the states. in no part of the u.s. constitution are you required to get more than a simple majority of both houses to do anything. there's a 2/3 required for treaty only in the senate. that was special with foreign powers. there's a 2/3 requirement to amend the constitution or to impeach someone. but for legislation everywhere in the constitution all you need is a majority, and these pe

at the facts, they don't appear to have a vast number of military involved in the operations in afghanistan or iraq. there doesn't appear to be a particular reason for why that nation should be targeted. >> well, norway does have special forces operating around kabul, has had for a long time, and has declined to remove them. and inspite of, you know, multiple warnings from zawahiri and others, and if you look at the internet buzz on the gjihad websites that is why norway would be attacked, and another possibility is that there was a norwegian magazine a few years ago that republished the danish cartoons that muslims found offensive, and that was mentioned today, even though the norwegian government apologized for that publication. there was a thwarted attack last year that al qaeda central was believed to be responsible for. so it is not as if this is something that has been pristine in terms of threats. this is the country that has seen a number of threats, and i think that also having president obama make that statement publicly today indicates that the u.s. government at least believes i

iraq and afghanistan. have made incredible sacrifices. have taken on incredible responsibilities. you know, you see some 23-year-old who is leading a platoon in hugely dangerous circumstances making decisions, operating complex technologies, these are folks who can perform, but, unfortunately, what we're seeing is that a lot of these young veterans have a higher unemployment rate than people who didn't serve and that makes no sense, so what we would like to do is potentially combine a tax credit for a company that hires veterans with a campaign to have private companies step up and do the right thing and hire more veterans, and one of the things we've done is internally in the federal government, we have minimum wage a huge emphasis on ramping up our outreach to veterans and hiring of veterans, and this has been a top priority of mine. the notion that these folks who are sacrificing for our freedom and our security end up coming home and not being able to find a job i think is unacceptable. >> mr. president, this next question comes from someone else you may recognize, and what's inte

victims, that sort of thing. the relatives of soldiers slain in iraq and afghanistan also allegedly hacked. that's the thing about this story. it's one thing to say that celebrities and athletes and politicians' numbers were hacked. they are not particularly sympathetic figures for the general public. but when you talk about members of the general public, just people, just victims, people grieving over the recent knowledge that a loved one has been killed, that's something that everybody on all sides of the aisle have called appalling and deplorable and unacceptable. the statement by james murdoch today, i just had a chance to read it through. it's a long, perhaps 1500 word statement. in it, he says the good things that the "news of the world" does, this is the largest english language circulation paper in the world, the seventh biggest in terms of circulation newspaper in the world, but he says the good things that the paper does have been sullied by behavior that was wrong. indeed, he writes in recent allegations are true, that behavior was inhuman and has no place in our company. the "n
